You are getting married. You do not owe the room a Broadway audition.
Start with the two people dancing
If you love choreography, go for it. Rehearse the routine, enjoy the reveal and have your moment. If the thought of counting steps while everyone watches makes you want to hide behind the cake, you have other options.
You can sway. You can keep it short. You can ask the DJ about inviting guests onto the floor after your opening moment. The right choice is the one that lets you enjoy being there together.
Pick the song, then pick the actual recording
A song title is the start of the conversation. Which artist? Which recording? The original, a cover, an acoustic version or a live performance? Those are not always interchangeable.
Use the music ideas page to collect a few possibilities, then listen to each one all the way through. Listen to the words as well as the part you recognize. A beautiful chorus does not automatically mean the whole song says what you want it to say.
Save the exact artist and version in your plan. If you are sharing a link with your DJ, include a short note explaining which moment it belongs to. Make it easy for the person pressing play to get it right.
A shorter dance can still be a complete moment
If the full recording feels long, ask your DJ about a shorter edit. Around ninety seconds to two minutes can be a useful conversation starter for a nervous couple. It is not a requirement and it is not a promise that every song will edit the same way.
Agree where it starts, where it finishes and what happens next. Tell the photographer and video team too. A clear ending is kinder to everyone than the two of you whispering, are we still doing this, while the music keeps going.
Family dances belong to your actual family
The same thinking applies to father–daughter, mother–son and other family dances. Choose the people and the format that fit your life. Combine the moments if you want. Dance with another important person. Skip a tradition that does not feel right.
A family situation can be complicated. You do not need to explain it to the entire ballroom. Tell your MC privately what you want announced, what you do not want announced and who should give the cue.
Choose the moment. Make the plan. Then look at the person you are dancing with. They are the reason for the song. The rest of us can enjoy the view.
For your own event
Choose the song and the exact recording together.
Agree the start, ending, length and next cue with your DJ.
Keep, change, combine or skip traditions to suit your real family.
